I resisted alternate tunings on the banjo, and I kept my banjo in standard G for over a year before ever venturing to anything else. I played the guitar before I played the banjo. Like I said, I can easily relate to this resistance. For most, this is enough to overcome the drawbacks to not playing in multiple tunings.īut here’s one really important thing to remember: a banjo is not a guitar.Īnd while there are similarities in how you approach the playing of the banjo and the guitar, there are also some really fundamental differences, which we’ll explore in a sec. ![]() And the primary advantage of playing out of one tuning is only having to learn one set of tuning-specific chord formations. As such, the typical approach to learning the guitar is to start by learning the chords.Īnd learning chords for the first time – both where they’re located and how to get your fingers into all those awkward positions, is a major pain in the rear.Īnd people tend to want to avoid things that are major pains in the rear! Being able to play the primary chords on the guitar is a major learning milestone, and a process few people want to repeat!Īs mentioned, the main reason most guitar players only play out of one tuning is because the guitar, and the music most commonly played on it, is chord driven. It’s also worth noting that the resistance to alternate tunings most commonly comes from people with some prior experience playing the guitar, which is completely understandable. The guitar’s rise in popularity coincided with the rise in chord-driven music. That being said, in this day and age, most people who would ask the above question would probably consider standard G, or gDGBD, as the default tuning, as more often than not this is the one most banjo instruction begins with (an artifact of history, rather than an inherent property of the banjo). Which means you can tune your banjo strings to anything you want, and whatever tuning you end up with is no less “right” than anyone else’s tunings. There’s a range of notes each string can accommodate, creating an exceedingly large number of possible combinations. Sure, there are some tunings that may be preferred in certain styles or genres (standard G for bluegrass, for example, since that’s the one Earl Scruggs liked), but there isn’t any one tuning that’s inherently better for banjo playing than another.Īs with most things, and “rules” we concoct exist only in our shared imaginations. This alone may be part of the problem, as the truth is there really is no such thing as a standard tuning. The word alternate suggests that there’s a norm that’s being deviated from. In fact, many years ago, I said those same exact things.įirst of all, I should point out that the term that we use to describe the various tunings – “alternate” – implies that there’s some standard that you’re deviating from. Or to put it another way, why can’t I just learn all of my songs out of the same tuning?Īnd I get it. ![]() One of the most common questions that arises from beginning banjo players is: do I REALLY need to learn alternate tunings? In this article, you’ll learn why alternate tunings are used, why you should strongly consider using them if you’re a banjo player, why they shouldn’t be feared, and then how to approach using them according to what your goals are on the banjo. The library to them is one of their happy recreational spots, a feeling that is shared by their parents, who also participate in the community pleasures offered in the park." In 1953, the park board and library system came to an agreement to renovate the first floor of the recreation building so the library could expand. Countryman noted that “when are tired of playing they come up and settle down happily with their books. During the early years of the first iteration of the library, Ms. The current pool went back to its roots and used natural filtration from the creek and pond, thus making it the nation’s first public natural swimming pool when it reopened in on July 24th, 2015.įrom 1910 to 1953, the library on the second floor of the recreation building was a huge hit for the children in the area. It wouldn’t be until 1979 when significant upgrades to the pool would be made again, with the most recent renovations coming in 2015. These upgrades saw its popularity rise, and in the 1930’s, as many as 1,400 children per day would use the pool during the Summer months. ![]() ![]() The pollution that ran through the creek eventually became too much of a hazard, and in 1927 a new pool was made that used city water and filtration and chlorination systems. The pool and pond quickly became a popular spot to cool off during the summer, and events such as log rolling contests and canoe races were a frequent sight at the park. It is because of the Webber’s contributions that Camden Park was renamed Webber Park in 1939. Charles Webber, who was the grandson of John Deere, owned and operated the Minneapolis branch of his grandfather’s company, which made it possible for his family to give back to the community by helping create one of the nicest parks in the city. The building had to be named after their 9-year-old son, John Deere Webber, who had recently passed away, a new dam had to be built along the creek, and an outdoor playground had to be installed for the children of the neighborhood to enjoy. This was made possible by Charles and Mary Webber, who donated the money for the construction with three conditions. The nucleus of the park would be a new recreation building next to the pond, featuring a library on the 2nd floor. In 1909 Camden Park officially opened, with one of its key features being a pond that the park board put there by damming Shingle Creek. While the neighbors and businesses in the area were split 50/50 on the idea of having to pay for the new park, the foundation was in place. As the need for a park in the area became more apparent, Superintendent Theodore Wirth and his colleagues gathered enough votes to establish a park along Shingle Creek. It has seen its ups and downs, but for over 100 years this park has been an important focal point in the Camden community.įor almost twenty years the Minneapolis Park Board planned on acquiring land near the Mississippi River in Camden for a new park. ![]() A great example of this success is Webber Park in North Minneapolis. In one case, Oster was able to follow one such subject through a week-long treatment of Parkinson's disease at the outset the patient couldn't perceive binaural beats, but by the end of the week of treatment, the patient could hear them again. ![]() For example, Oster found that a number of the subjects he worked with that were incapable of perceiving binaural beats suffered from Parkinson's disease. Oster also considered binaural beats to be a potentially useful medical diagnostic tool, not merely for finding and assessing auditory impairments, but also (because they involved different neurological pathways than ordinary auditory processing) for more general neurological conditions. In particular, Oster saw binaural beats as a powerful tool for cognitive and neurological research, addressing questions such as how animals locate sounds in their three-dimensional environment, and also the remarkable ability of animals to pick out and focus on specific sounds in a sea of noise (what is known as the "cocktail party effect"). Oster's paper was landmark not so much for its own new laboratory findings, but rather that in the way in which it identified and tied together the isolated islands of relevant research done since Dove, in a way that gave the subject fresh insight and relevance to scientific research. While research about them continued after that, the subject basically remained a scientific curiosity until 134 years later, with the publishing of Gerald Oster's article "Auditory Beats in the Brain" (Scientific American, 1973). ![]() Heinrich Wilhelm Dove discovered binaural beats in 1839. 3 Hypothetical effects on brain function.Second, that binaural beats may influence the brain in more subtle ways through the entrainment of brainwaves and can be used to produce relaxation and other health benefits. First, they are of interest to neurophysiologists investigating the sense of hearing. Interest in binaural beats can be classified into two categories. The difference between the two frequencies must be small (below about 30 Hz) for the effect to occur otherwise the two tones will be heard separately and no beat will be perceived. The frequency of the tones must be below about 1,000 to 1,500 hertz for the beating to be heard. A beating tone will be perceived, as if the two tones mixed naturally, out of the brain. The brain produces a phenomenon resulting in low-frequency pulsations in the loudness of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a subject's ears, using stereo headphones. This effect was discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. Binaural beats or binaural tones are auditory processing artifacts, that is apparent sounds, the perception of which arises in the brain independent of physical stimuli. And since the signal is digital, reception is much improved over the staticky rabbit-ears era. Nearly all modern television sets support a radio frequency (RF) connection, also known as the coaxial port, which means if you buy an HD antenna, you’ll receive locally broadcast stations like ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. Of course, you can also get those stations for free. When you sign up with any provider that handles local TV, you’ll enter your zip code, ensuring you get your area’s broadcast affiliates for ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. The next most affordable option, Sling, only carries three local stations, and only in larger markets, but it still manages to include some of the top sports channels. That would be Philo and, as you might guess, it’s the cheapest. Only two of the services we tried don’t include full local channel coverage and one of those makes no effort at carrying sports. I also learned that when it comes to base plans, higher price tags are mostly due to the cost of providing multiple networks – particularly sports and local stations. Where the latter cost between $5 and $20 per month, many live TV services hit around the $70 mark and can go higher than $100 with additional perks, channel packages and premium extras. When I started my research, I was struck by the price difference between live TV and a standard streaming app like Netflix or Peacock. After that, you can activate the app on your device. Most live TV apps require you to sign up and pay via a web browser. A faster and more stable internet connection tends to give you a better experience. You get access through apps on your phone, tablet, smart TV or streaming device and the signal arrives over the internet. Streaming live TV is a lot like using Netflix. ![]() What to look for in a live TV streaming service What you need to stream live TV ![]() Serif employs around 85 people at its HQ in Nottingham, UK.
